Learn to Speedskate program

Program Outline:

An introductory speed skating program will be offered. Instruction will be formatted to follow an 8 week cycle (approx.)

  • September 11th – October 30th
  • November 6th – December 19th
  • January 8th – February 25th
  • March 4th – March 26th (Recruitment program during March Break)
  1. October 30th Badge Testing
  2. October 31st No Practice Halloween!
  3. December 18th Badge Testing
  4. December 19th mini-meet
  5. February Long Track Mini-meet at the Brewer Park Oval weather permitting

Physical Objectives

  • Stamina - aerobic fitness through fun and games
  • Strength – off ice, (not offered as part of the on ice programming)
  • Speed included in each warm-up prior to fatigue, low volume and high intensity
  • Skill – important see skill set below.
  • Suppleness – dynamic stretching included with warm-up.

  1. Forward skating
  2. Backward skating
  3. Balance
  4. Edge control
  5. Cross-over
  6. Basic position
  7. Stopping
  8. Starts
  9. Agility

Training Focus (suggested outline)

  • Week 1-2 (1,2,3,6)
  • Weeks 3-4 (maintain 1,2,3,6, introduce 4,5)
  • Weeks 5-6 (maintain 1-6 introduce 7,8,9)
  • Week 7 (consolidate1-9, badge testing)
  • Week 8 (application, mini-meet)
