Learn to Speedskate program
Program Outline:
An introductory speed skating program will be offered. Instruction will be formatted to follow an 8 week cycle (approx.)
- September 11th – October 30th
- November 6th – December 19th
- January 8th – February 25th
- March 4th – March 26th (Recruitment program during March Break)
- October 30th Badge Testing
- October 31st No Practice Halloween!
- December 18th Badge Testing
- December 19th mini-meet
- February Long Track Mini-meet at the Brewer Park Oval weather permitting
Physical Objectives
- Stamina - aerobic fitness through fun and games
- Strength – off ice, (not offered as part of the on ice programming)
- Speed included in each warm-up prior to fatigue, low volume and high intensity
- Skill – important see skill set below.
- Suppleness – dynamic stretching included with warm-up.

- Backward skating

- Edge control
- Cross-over
- Basic position
- Stopping
- Starts
- Agility
Training Focus (suggested outline)
- Week 1-2 (1,2,3,6)
- Weeks 3-4 (maintain 1,2,3,6, introduce 4,5)
- Weeks 5-6 (maintain 1-6 introduce 7,8,9)
- Week 7 (consolidate1-9, badge testing)
- Week 8 (application, mini-meet)
